WHY DO YOU NEED A DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM?

Industrial dust collection systems are used to filter dust and contaminants from the air, such as welding fumes, particulate created by grinding and cutting applications, plastic fines, sawdust, chemical powders and other fine airborne particulate. Dust collectors are widely used throughout the manufacturing industry and in other industries such as mining, agriculture, food production, metalworking/fabrication, pharmaceuticals, chemical compounding and more. Dust collection systems are required when applications produce more airborne dust than can be managed by the HVAC system or when dust particulate is toxic, combustible or dangerous. Air filtration is safer, more energy efficient and more environmentally friendly than simple exhaust ventilation, because dirty air is filtered and clean air is returned to the facility.

SOURCE CAPTURE VS. AMBIENT AIR FILTRATION

What kind of air filtration system is right for your application? Industrial dust collection systems can be broadly divided into two categories: source capture and ambient. In both kind of system, dust-laden air is pulled into the dust collector where dust particles are filtered out. Collected dust is safely contained in a dust receptacle for proper disposal, and clean air is either returned to the facility or exhausted.

SOURCE CAPTURE

Source capture industrial dust collection systems collect fumes and dust as close to the source as possible to keep them from propagating through the facility. Dust- and fume-producing processes may be contained under a hood or in an enclosure. Other applications may use fume arms, fume extraction guns, backdraft/sidedraft intake plenums or downdraft tables.

Applications:

  • Robotic welding
  • Manual welding
  • Plasma and laser cutting
  • Bulk powder/batch mixing applications
  • Any high-volume or high-risk dust and fume application

AMBIENT

Ambient industrial dust collection systems cycle and filter air from an entire room, area or facility. They may be a stand-alone dust, fume and mist collection solution for low-volume/low-risk applications or a secondary solution to remove dust and fumes not captured by the primary source capture system. Ambient systems may be ducted or ductless.

Applications:

  • Whole-facility air filtration

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DUST COLLECTOR

There are many different kinds of dust collectors, including cartridge dust collectors, baghouse dust collectors (e.g., pulse jet dust collectors), cyclone dust collectors and wet collection systems (wet scrubbers). Cartridge dust collectors have become the #1 choice for most industrial and manufacturing applications. Why? Compared to baghouse dust collectors, cyclone and wet collection systems, cartridge dust collectors are easier to use and maintain, use less energy, and take up less floorspace. Cartridge filters come in a wide range of filter media options for collection of different dust types and volumes, including ultrafine dust, heavy or abrasive dust, sticky or hygrophilic dust, and oily dust. A cartridge dust collector can also be equipped with a deflagration system for collection of combustible dust and HEPA or activated carbon after-filters for collection sub-micron particulate, gases and vapors. A filter cleaning system (pulsing system) will help to extend the life of cartridge filters. These industry workhorses are versatile, effective and efficient for most general manufacturing applications.
